Following on from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I once again attended Melbourne’s Classic Japan show this year. And it was full of JDM goodness!
A few less pictures this year, I’ve attended 3 times now and I’ve sort of seen it all. Here are some of the best.
Not pictured: endless early Skylines, Subaru XT, a few Stageas and Legnums, lots of old rotary Mazdas, 2 first-generation Cosmos, some very nice AW11 MR2s...
Not even in the event yet, this is just parked outside. Notice: S15, Celica, Prelude in the background. No shortage of cool.
The paint on this Cressy was dope
Yep, this Cressy had it all
No idea what’s going on here
Is this what Americans refer to as a Tercel? Because this is one mint Tercel
Oh Z31 how I love thee. Digi-dash and tunnel gauges to the left. Auto-tragic.
Isuzu Impulse!
Saw this car here 2 years ago, lost my shit. The CREAM OF THE CROP as far as I’m concerned.
!!! I like these a lot. I think they pull off the smug, smooth luxury coupe look very well. Though understated
Very nice S13. Drift and rice kids couldn’t care less about the badge that came on their Silvia. I DO
Not the only MightyBoy in attendence, but easily the coolest. That’s a BBQ in there!
Cute! That’s a Century next to it, V8
The low profile lights really help it look more aggressive I think.
Based on some old articles I’ve seen, I think this Mitsubishi is a real AMG. Crazy.
This is from the other JC Cosmo in attendance. 3 ROTOR SEQUENTIAL TWIN TURBO is what it says. Mmmf
My Carolla-loving friend has been at pains to explain to me the difference between flat and slant nose cars. Here it is: captured for the ages

“MIDSHIP DOHC TURBO EXCITING MICRO COUPE AZ-1"
That is the best thing I’ve seen all day.

I never realized how much that generation of Hijet looks like a Vanagon with a MK2 Escort grille grafted on.

I think the early days of Japanese cars were much more derivative than they are now. Like how the Celica is like a baby Mustang.

That’s not a Tercel, but a Corolla 4WD here in the US

Glad I’m not the only one who saw Mk II Escort in the thumbnail...

I’m not sure that car will ever look aggressive. Anime embarrassed perhaps :p

Holy SHIT! Are you pulling my leg?
I saw it there a couple of years ago too, though I notice it had different wheels back then. Both sets look very nice ;)
I adore these cars and yours looks like a flawless example. I wish I’d taken the time to stop and chat about it.

The van in the first picture looks like a baby Vanagon

Blondude said the same
I never realized how much that generation of Hijet looks like a Vanagon with a MK2 Escort grille grafted on.
Vanagons weren’t really a thing here.

My Miata came with those headlights. You might as not have headlights at all. I “downgraded” to the stock 7" sealed beams and it was a huge upgrade. I can’t help but shake my head every time I see a Miata with those headlights.

:( I assumed they were some sort of low-profile high-power modern light that is at least as good as the original.
:(:(:(

The Tercel was originally the cheapest version of the Corolla, but later became a sub-compact under the Corolla. The model ended in the US sometime in the 90's.

Under
the Corolla? I see. I gotta look those things up some time. I’m missing out on sub-sub-sub compact glory!

Wikipedia has a page on them. The 4WD ones were popular in the US, and nice ones are sort of sought after now days.

I had a read. This is like a whole world of Toyotas I’ve never seen that never came to America. I thought I was getting there when I found out it was succeeded by the Platz (ie. the Echo), but...
What the hell is this?! We never got a 2-door! Absolute anarchy!
We
did
get the Paseo. Lets leave it at that.

Definitely mine, haha :) Check out:

It’s got a heap of different panels on it compared to CJ14, and has had about 7 sets of wheels since I’ve had it. It’ll be back at CJ next year, and I’ll usually go to a few other shows during the year. Always happy to talk about it!

That gallery is porn! I spy a Motocompo - would that by chance be the one belonging to the Civic parked next to your AZ-1 at CJ14?
I’ll definitely be at CJ next year. I don’t know of any other good Jap shows though. Just Facebook car meets that end with haggard R33s ripping skids. I’ll look out for you.

Do people do this on purpose, or can they just not afford new tires to fit their rims?

Oh, it’s on purpose. Stretching small tyres over bigger rims is a style thing.
